A Mysterious Island Has Emerged in a Canadian Lake

An unexpected sight has captured the attention of Canadians after a vegetation-covered floating platform was discovered drifting through Williston Lake in British Columbia. Local resident and boater Rocky Avery documented the unusual phenomenon on video and shared it across social media, sparking curiosity about its origins. The structure appears to support living trees and plant growth atop what may be buoyant material, functioning more as a raft than a traditional island.
Initial skepticism from BC Hydro, the power company operating the reservoir’s dam, gave way to confirmation when satellite imagery from the European Space Agency verified the object’s existence. The floating mass was clearly visible on July 21, 2026, positioned approximately 100 kilometers west of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. However, the object’s location has proven elusive, with Avery reporting a rediscovery in the Ospika River, which feeds into the main reservoir.
Experts believe the formation may be linked to exceptional water levels at the massive seventh-largest global reservoir. For the first time in 14 years, Williston Lake reached full capacity earlier in 2026, potentially dislodging materials that had accumulated along shorelines over extended periods. When water levels rose significantly during controlled spillage in June and July, these accumulated deposits may have broken free and begun floating independently.
While the floating island poses no apparent threat to dam operations, boaters and fishermen should exercise caution. The structure’s exact composition remains unclear, and with Williston Lake’s vast expanse, the object may continue moving unpredictably through waterways.
