A new study challenges the conventional understanding of why groups make better decisions than individuals. While the “wisdom of crowds” phenomenon has long been attributed to the averaging of multiple opinions, researchers from Torcuato Di Tella University have discovered the real mechanism behind collective success involves a more sophisticated process.
Scientists conducted three experiments with 900 participants to examine how small groups reach accurate conclusions. They found that groups performed best when they broke complex problems into smaller, manageable components before reassembling their estimates into a final answer—a technique called Collective Fermi Estimation. This collaborative problem-solving approach consistently outperformed simple averaging of initial guesses, regardless of whether individual participants dominated discussions.
The research revealed that when groups were explicitly instructed to decompose problems into bite-sized pieces, they produced significantly more accurate results than groups that only exchanged preliminary estimates. Even when individuals used the same decomposition method alone, groups still achieved superior outcomes, suggesting that the collaborative checking and discussion of component estimates provides added value unavailable to solo workers.
While the findings were limited to numerical estimation tasks, researchers believe the strategy offers practical applications for improving decision-making wherever groups tackle complex problems together. The discovery that successful groups naturally gravitate toward related concepts suggests this efficient reasoning pathway can be taught and fostered in organizational and institutional settings.
