James Gunn, co-chief of DC Studios, has dismissed widespread speculation about the production timeline for the upcoming Batman films. An internet rumor suggested that director Matt Reeves was planning to shoot “The Batman 2” and “The Batman 3” simultaneously, a strategy that observers believed explained the extended development period for the sequel. Gunn directly refuted this claim when asked about it on social media, stating he could confirm the rumor was false.
While back-to-back filming of sequels remains a common practice in Hollywood, this will not be the case for the Batman franchise. Studios have previously employed this strategy with major franchises, including “The Matrix,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and the recent “Avengers” films, shooting multiple installments as one continuous production to maintain creative continuity and capitalize on audience momentum.
“The Batman 2” is currently in production in London and will arrive in theaters on February 18, 2028, nearly six years after the original film’s 2022 release. The sequel has experienced multiple release date delays, having been originally scheduled for October 2026. The film reunites Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight and introduces new cast members including Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan, alongside returning actors Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch.
