Researchers at a Brazilian institute have conducted an extensive investigation into how people experience and interpret unexplainable phenomena. The study examined responses from over 5,000 participants who reported encountering unusual events that defied conventional explanation, ranging from sensations of presence to out-of-body experiences.
Using a detailed questionnaire, scientists gathered information about the nature of these experiences, including when they occurred, how long they lasted, and where participants were at the time. The findings revealed that most incidents happened while people were awake and alert, often when they were alone. Participants reported varying durations, from instantaneous moments to several minutes, with most individuals experiencing such events only once or twice in their lifetime.
The research demonstrated that the majority of people who reported these experiences were psychologically well and viewed them as neutral or positive occurrences. When reflecting on what caused their experiences, participants offered diverse explanations, with many attributing them to random chance or divine intervention. Notably, approximately half of respondents reported feeling joy during these events, and similar numbers said the experiences had beneficial long-term effects on their lives.
According to the research team, these findings highlight the importance of studying nonordinary experiences more thoroughly. By better understanding how people process and respond to unexplainable phenomena, researchers hope to reduce stigma and help individuals make sense of their experiences.
