Shopify is experiencing significant growth from artificial intelligence-powered search capabilities, according to the company’s second-quarter earnings report. Rather than cannibalizing traditional search traffic like AI has done for some publishers, the e-commerce platform found that AI is complementing existing search methods and boosting overall commerce activity.
During its earnings call, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein reported that AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year-over-year in the second quarter. The company emphasized that conventional search remains a major traffic driver, with traditional search sessions up 1.3 times over two years and accounting for roughly one-third of all storefront visits. Shopify’s strong financial performance reflected this AI momentum, with revenue reaching $3.6 billion, exceeding Wall Street expectations of $3.4 billion.
Finkelstein attributed the success to AI’s superior ability to match products with customer intent. Unlike traditional search engines that rank by keyword popularity, AI agents analyze multiple product dimensions simultaneously to find precise matches. For example, an AI assistant can understand complex requirements like fitting three car seats across a sedan, while traditional search merely targets the “car seat” keyword. This nuanced approach has compressed shopping journeys, with half of AI-referred sessions landing directly on product pages—2.5 times higher than traditional search conversion rates.
Additionally, Shopify noted that 75 percent of AI-attributed purchases occurred outside its top 100 categories, suggesting the technology particularly benefits smaller merchants across the platform’s long tail of e-commerce businesses.
