Strand Releasing has secured North American distribution rights to “Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building,” a Mexican coming-of-age drama that debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week. The film marks director Bruno Santamaria Razo’s feature debut and represents a significant achievement for Mexican cinema, becoming the country’s first Critics’ Week selection in nearly two decades.
Set in Mexico City during the early 1990s, the narrative centers on an 11-year-old boy navigating complex emotions toward his closest friend while his family confronts his father’s HIV diagnosis. The story later jumps forward three decades, allowing the protagonist to revisit and reinterpret childhood memories he could not fully comprehend at the time. The production brought together creative teams from Mexico, Brazil, and Denmark, with Razo also penning the screenplay.
The film arrives at Strand following considerable festival recognition, including four awards at Cinélalto Toulouse earlier this year. Strand plans to bring the film to North American audiences during spring 2027. Company executive Jon Gerrans praised the work as a beautifully realized narrative that demonstrates Razo’s background in documentary filmmaking, while producers expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Strand’s established track record in bringing Latin American cinema to U.S. audiences.
