The New York Times has launched a sports-themed version of its popular word puzzle game in partnership with The Athletic. This variant challenges players to identify connections between 16 words organized into four distinct categories, each difficulty level marked by different colors.
In this puzzle format, players must group words that share a common theme or characteristic. The game resets daily with increasingly challenging word combinations. Each puzzle allows up to four incorrect guesses before ending, and players can shuffle the board to help identify patterns. Like the original Wordle game, successful solutions can be shared on social media platforms.
Today’s puzzle, numbered #681, features four categories: items that are thrown, recent first-round NFL draft selections, descriptors used for trading cards, and words that can follow the term “score.” The complete solutions include baseball, dart, frisbee, and hammer for the first group; Mendoza, Ward, Williams, and Young for draft picks; autograph, parallel, patch, and rookie for card types; and board, bug, line, and sheet for words that follow “score.”
Players encountering difficulty can reference the color-coded system where yellow indicates the easiest category, progressing through green, blue, and purple for increasing complexity. A fresh puzzle will be available the following day for continued gameplay.
