As NFL teams finalized their 53-man rosters on Sunday, a significant presence of former Ohio State players secured spots across the league. In total, 59 Buckeyes made the cut, demonstrating the university’s continued influence in professional football. Notably, only five NFL franchises—the Bengals, Chargers, Eagles, Packers, and Ravens—failed to roster at least one former Ohio State player who completed their college career in scarlet and gray.
The Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals led all teams by each retaining six former Buckeyes on their active rosters. However, not every Ohio State alumnus achieved their goal of making a team’s initial roster. Eight players were released during Sunday’s cutdown, including cornerback Eli Apple from the 49ers, defensive end Tyreke Smith from the Chiefs, and linebacker Malik Harrison from the Steelers, among others.
On a positive note, two undrafted free agents from Ohio State managed to overcome the odds and secure roster positions. Center Seth McLaughlin, a Rimington Award winner, earned retention with the Detroit Lions, while offensive lineman Josh Fryar successfully made the Arizona Cardinals’ roster. Additionally, Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper would have brought the total to 60 former Buckeyes, but he was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list pending resolution of domestic violence allegations.
