Law enforcement in South Africa has taken four men into custody following the fatal shooting of former boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete on August 21. The 38-year-old was ambushed outside his Mdantsane home in the Eastern Cape while sitting in his vehicle waiting for his gate to open. Two assailants wearing balaclavas opened fire in the attack.
Authorities arrested five individuals between Saturday and Sunday in connection with the killing. A 30-year-old taken into custody on Saturday has since been released and is now considered a witness. The remaining four suspects, aged 22, 27, 27, and 28, remain in police custody. The youngest suspect was apprehended at King Phalo Airport while allegedly attempting to board a flight. The other three were arrested in Mdantsane and Scenery Park on Sunday.
The 22-year-old suspect, identified as Uzu Kuwana, has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder. The attempted murder charge relates to a 27-year-old woman who sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident. Two additional suspects face charges of illegal firearm and ammunition possession. All four detainees are scheduled to appear in Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, August 25. Police indicated that further arrests may be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.
Tete was a two-division world champion who held titles in the bantamweight and super-flyweight divisions. He was preparing for a boxing comeback following the expiration of a four-year doping suspension in July. He remains the Guinness record holder for the fastest knockout in a world title fight, achieving victory in just 11 seconds.
