Toronto police have arrested two individuals in connection with a shooting at the United States Consulate that took place in July. The suspects, a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy, are being described by authorities as “criminals for hire.” This marks the second shooting incident at the diplomatic facility within a five-month period, following a previous attack in March.
Police Chief Myron Demkiw revealed that investigators believe the suspects were recruited through an encrypted messaging application and were offered financial compensation to carry out the violent attack. According to Detective Superintendent Joe Matthews, law enforcement has identified a concerning trend of crimes being commissioned online, with individuals hired to conduct shootings and other violent acts in exchange for payment. The suspects face multiple charges including firearm offenses, arson, and damage to an internationally protected premises.
The July 27 incident occurred when a white Honda Accord approached the consulate early in the morning and fired a single shot at the building. Despite a marked police vehicle stationed nearby, the shooter managed to escape, though officers pursued the vehicle briefly before discontinuing the chase due to unsafe driving conditions. Police also allege the two suspects were involved in an arson incident three days prior to the consulate shooting.
