Six area high schools united for the C-U Relays on Saturday morning, showcasing how competitive athletics can serve a broader purpose. The event brought together 72 girls swimmers and divers from Urbana, Champaign Central, Centennial, Uni High, St. Thomas More and Mahomet-Seymour to participate in what has become a cherished annual tradition since its inception in 2018.
Beyond the competition in the pool, the meet emphasized community engagement and charitable giving. Participating teams and families collected essential supplies including snacks, diapers and Pull-Ups for children served by Crisis Nursery. Following the athletic competition, swimmers, divers and coaches delivered these donations to Crisis Nursery’s Touch-a-Truck community event in Champaign.
Urbana coach Amanda York highlighted the significance of the gathering, noting that the event demonstrates the positive impact high school athletics can achieve when focused on more than just winning. She praised the young athletes for embodying values of teamwork, community service and friendship while simultaneously preparing for the upcoming competitive season.
