Disney+ has greenlit a pilot episode for a television series based on the “Spaceship Earth” attraction at EPCOT. The project draws inspiration from the iconic geodesic dome ride that has been a cornerstone of the theme park since its 1982 opening. The series will follow a group of teenagers from different time periods who must work together to prevent a catastrophic global disaster and confront an enigmatic threat connected to the nature of time itself.
Jason Fuchs will lead the project as showrunner and executive producer, with support from director Lee Toland Krieger and producer Michael Waldron. Waldron brings extensive experience from his work on Marvel projects including “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and the Disney+ series “Loki.” Krieger has directed episodes for popular shows including “You” and “Shadow & Bone.” The production is currently in the casting phase for the pilot.
This marks another addition to Disney’s expanding slate of entertainment based on theme park attractions. The studio has previously found success adapting park experiences for film and television, most notably with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, which has earned over $4.5 billion worldwide. If the pilot receives a series order, “Spaceship Earth” would join other recent Disney+ pilot pickups including reboots of “The Mickey Mouse Club” and adaptations of “The Last Kids on Earth” and “Aquamarine.”
