The San Sebastián Film Festival has announced that Belgian-French filmmaker Michaël R. Roskam’s latest work will serve as the festival’s closing night presentation. The World War II resistance thriller, titled “Le Faux Soir,” will premiere in Europe at the festival following its initial debut at Toronto’s Special Presentations program. The film will conclude the festival’s proceedings on September 26 after the awards ceremony at the Kursaal venue.
Set in Nazi-occupied Belgium during 1943, the narrative centers on a group of resistance fighters who devise an audacious plan to combat German propaganda. After occupation forces commandeer the national newspaper Le Soir, the fighters create a counterfeit edition featuring the publication’s authentic appearance but filled with satirical content mocking the German regime. This operation has been characterized as an early example of media manipulation against occupiers.
The project reunites Roskam with San Sebastián after a 12-year absence, during which his crime drama “The Drop” earned recognition for its screenplay. Roskam’s directorial career has gained international prominence through acclaimed works including the Oscar-nominated “Bullhead” and Venice entry “Racer and the Jailbird.” The ensemble cast features established actors including Arieh Worthalter, Mélanie Thierry, and Bouli Lanners. The film is produced by companies from Belgium and France, with international distribution managed by Goodfellas.
