Israeli filmmaker Avi Nesher is bringing the October 7, 2023 attacks to the big screen with his new film “Our Loves,” which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie follows five Israelis whose lives intersect in the days before and during the terror attacks that resulted in the deaths of 1,195 people and the abduction of 251 others. Through characters dealing with personal crises—a young woman estranged from her father, a police officer hiding secrets, and a heartbroken woman seeking solace—Nesher explores how ordinary people’s worlds collide with tragedy.
Nesher, a veteran director known for “Past Life” who previously served as an IDF analyst, emphasizes that “Our Loves” is not a political or military examination of the attacks. The film dedicates over an hour of its two-hour runtime to depicting the attacks, including the Nova music festival massacre. Despite its heavy subject matter, Nesher insists the film centers on personal resilience and universal truths about how people rebuild when their lives are shattered.
The project has already gained significant recognition, earning 12 nominations for Israel’s Ophir Awards, including Best Film, and serving as the opening selection for the Haifa International Film Festival. Nesher’s decision to create this film was partly inspired by his own experience with personal tragedy and a chance encounter with survivors who sought comfort through cinema.
