A new international film project has recently completed production, bringing together an acclaimed cast led by Oscar-nominated actor Barkhad Abdi. The film, titled “Maalstroom,” is a Dutch-Belgian co-production written and directed by Teddy Cherim, with Jim Deddes and Tenzing Woing also starring in key roles. Abdi, recognized for his breakthrough performance in “Captain Phillips,” will play a character specifically written for him by Cherim.
The narrative follows a barge captain facing financial difficulties who accepts a shipment of sand traveling between two European ports. His situation becomes complicated when he discovers a group of undocumented migrants concealed within his cargo. The story traces their journey along inland waterways as the captain must confront circumstances vastly different from his own experience.
Director Cherim described the project as handling weighty themes while maintaining moments of levity, drawing humor from the unusual circumstances aboard the vessel. He highlighted how the film examines Europe’s approach to migration through an absurdist lens, examining bureaucratic contradictions and societal responses. Producer Marten van Warmerdam emphasized the film’s human-centered approach to the migration issue, showing compassion and moral complexity through character interactions.
The production received backing from multiple funding sources across the Netherlands and Belgium. Paradiso Filmed Entertainment has scheduled a release in the Benelux region for the following year.
