The district underwent substantial redistricting following a Supreme Court decision that limited Voting Rights Act protections for minority voters. The reconfigured seat now stretches approximately 200 miles from Memphis through rural territory toward Nashville, incorporating areas that were previously part of different districts. Election analysts estimate that 71 percent of voters in the redrawn district are new to it. The changes transformed what was previously a competitive Democratic area into a Republican-leaning seat, prompting concerns from some Memphis residents about diminished representation.
Pearson gained national attention three years prior when he was dismissed from the Tennessee House of Representatives for participating in protests advocating for gun control legislation.
