A neck injury forced New York Jets rookie running back Chip Trayanum to be transported to a hospital following a preseason matchup against the Giants on Friday evening. The undrafted Toledo product suffered the injury during the final moments of the first half after being tackled by defensive end Trace Ford.
The Jets elected to run an offensive play rather than take a knee with just 10 seconds remaining before halftime. Trayanum received a handoff from quarterback Cade Klubnik and was immediately brought down by Ford’s tackle. Medical personnel rushed onto the field to assist the injured player while Jets staff remained in close proximity, many in prayer.
According to team reports, Trayanum was conscious and responsive with full movement in all extremities. He was fitted with a cervical collar, secured to a backboard, and transported via cart to receive further evaluation at a hospital. Observers noted the running back appeared to be moving both hands as he was taken from the stadium.
Earlier in the contest, Trayanum had recorded a one-yard touchdown run that capped an impressive opening drive. The rookie carried the ball nine times during that sequence alone and finished the game with 38 yards on 12 total attempts prior to his injury.
