Hulu has decided against renewing “Not Suitable for Work” for a second season, ending the comedy’s run after just nine episodes since its June premiere. The series, created by Mindy Kaling and featuring an ensemble cast including Ella Hunt and Jay Ellis, followed the professional and personal lives of ambitious 20-somethings navigating careers and relationships in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood. Warner Bros. Television, the show’s production company, is now seeking alternative platforms for the series.
Kaling executive produced the project alongside showrunner Charlie Grandy and 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein under her production banner, Kaling International. The cancellation marks the first sole creator credit for Kaling since her earlier success “The Mindy Project,” which initially aired on Fox before becoming a streaming hit on Hulu. Her subsequent ventures have included acclaimed series for Netflix and HBO Max, with her Netflix project “Running Point” already secured for a third season.
The ensemble cast featured Hunt as AJ, a Boston-born investment banker, alongside Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, and Nicholas Duvernay. The show also boasted recurring appearances from established actors including Constance Wu, Victor Garber, and Ego Nwodim. While early reviews noted some potential, the streamer ultimately determined the series did not warrant continuation at this time.
