Former Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger has acquired the Los Angeles Lakers in partnership with Thrive Capital founder Josh Kushner for $12.5 billion, marking a significant transaction in professional sports ownership. The purchase represents one of the most valuable sports franchise acquisitions to date and comes following Iger’s departure from Disney earlier this year.
In a joint statement, Iger and Kushner expressed their enthusiasm for stewardship of the historic franchise. “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world,” they said. The new owners pledged to build upon the foundation established by the Buss family and maintain the team’s competitive standards while serving the Los Angeles community.
The transaction requires formal approval from the NBA Board of Governors before completion. Lakers legend Magic Johnson quickly voiced his support for the acquisition, expressing confidence in the ownership group’s ability to return championships to the franchise. This purchase follows Iger’s earlier investment in Angel City FC, a women’s professional soccer team, further expanding his portfolio in professional sports ownership.
