Benfica are intensifying their efforts to bring midfielder João Palhinha back to Portugal. The Lisbon-based club has shifted strategy after Bayern Munich rejected an initial loan proposal, now preparing to pursue a permanent acquisition instead.
The Portuguese giants are proposing to meet Bayern’s €25 million valuation, with the possibility of structuring payments across two seasons to ease the financial burden. This flexibility could prove attractive as Benfica seeks to reinforce their midfield options with the experienced 31-year-old midfielder.
Bayern Munich has signaled a clear preference for a permanent solution rather than another temporary arrangement. Palhinha recently concluded a loan spell at Tottenham, where he made 45 appearances and scored seven goals, but the Premier League club opted against securing him permanently. Manager Vincent Kompany views the Portuguese international as surplus to requirements at the Allianz Arena, with sporting director Max Eberl indicating openness to various options.
Benfica manager Marco Silva holds a significant advantage in the pursuit, having previously worked with Palhinha at Fulham and knowing his capabilities intimately. However, the Portuguese outfit faces competition from Newcastle United, who are also serious contenders and positioned to offer the permanent transfer structure Bayern demands. Palhinha himself has previously expressed openness to returning to his boyhood club, where he spent time in their youth academy before progressing through Portuguese football.
