Bella Thorne has expanded her role in the upcoming “Spring Breakers” sequel beyond acting. The former Disney performer will also serve as the film’s writer and director, taking creative control over the project that was originally set to be helmed by Matthew Bright. Thorne’s involvement came after producers reviewed an early cut of her directorial debut, “Color Your Hurt,” a coming-of-age thriller, and requested she write material for the sequel.
The sequel’s cast includes “Stranger Things” star Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin from “Zombies 2,” and True Whitaker. Notable producers from the original 1999 film are returning for the project, including Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner. Original director Harmony Korine is not involved with the sequel and has expressed no interest in the project.
In discussing her vision for the film, Thorne emphasized how the new installment will differ from the 2012 original. She noted that the landscape has changed since the era when young Disney stars faced intense scrutiny and comparisons. According to Thorne, the sequel will maintain high energy while offering audiences an entertaining experience, promising fans “a lot of craziness” throughout the movie.
