Be For Films, a Brussels-based distribution company, has secured international sales rights to “Sisters,” the directorial debut of Spanish filmmaker Ione Hernández Sáenz. The acquisition comes ahead of the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, where it will screen in the Discovery Section.
The drama centers on two sisters, Chelo and Marta, whose relationship is tested when an unexpected summer event forces them to confront painful secrets from their past. The narrative explores the emotional complexity of familial bonds as the characters grapple with difficult choices about loyalty and protection within their family unit.
The film boasts an ensemble cast including Elena Anaya and Emma Suárez, with production backed by multiple Spanish institutions and international partners including HBO Max. Hernández Sáenz brings considerable experience to her feature debut, having previously directed award-winning short films and documentaries, including work that earned recognition from Cahiers du Cinéma. She currently teaches at Madrid’s EFTI International Center and mentors emerging filmmakers across Latin America through the San Sebastián Film Festival.
The project received financing support from Spanish cultural bodies and regional councils, reflecting significant institutional backing for the production.
