Anthropic has unveiled Claude Opus 5, its newest artificial intelligence model, which the company claims delivers superior performance while undercutting competitor pricing. The model demonstrates stronger capabilities than its predecessor Fable 5 in coding and knowledge-based tasks, positioning it as a practical tool for everyday business applications. At half the cost of Fable 5, Opus 5 will charge users $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.
The announcement reflects growing pressure on AI developers to address enterprise budget concerns. As corporations become more cautious about artificial intelligence investments, they increasingly demand tangible returns on spending rather than experimental capabilities. Anthropic faces competition from well-funded rivals including OpenAI, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, all offering more economical alternatives.
However, Anthropic deliberately positioned Opus 5 as a general-use model with intentional limitations in sensitive areas. The company acknowledged that Opus 5 does not represent cutting-edge performance in “risky, dual-use capabilities” such as cybersecurity research, remaining behind its restricted Mythos 5 model in these domains. This strategic design choice reflects ongoing collaboration between Anthropic and government agencies regarding responsible AI development and national security considerations.
