Two major distributors have acquired theatrical rights to “The Gallerist,” a satirical thriller set in Miami’s art scene. Roadside Attractions and Vertical will bring the film to cinemas on December 4, approximately one year after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.
The dark comedy features Natalie Portman in the lead role as an aspiring artist navigating the competitive world of Art Basel Miami. Her character becomes entangled in a criminal cover-up involving a fatal accident, which she attempts to conceal by marketing the deceased as an art installation. Director Cathy Yan helms the project, which also stars Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Executives from both distribution companies praised the film’s originality and ensemble cast. They highlighted Portman’s performance as the standout element, noting her ability to blend comedic timing with dramatic intensity while exploring themes of art and crime.
The production team includes writer James Pedersen and producers Ash Sarohia, Sophie Mas, and Portman herself, alongside Jonathan King, Tom McCarthy, Rae Baron, and Zola Elgart Glassman. This marks another significant theatrical acquisition for both distributors as they continue building their fall and winter release slates.
