The San Sebastián Film Festival will honor legendary German filmmaker Werner Herzog with its prestigious Donostia Award during the festival’s 74th edition this September. Herzog will receive the recognition at the Spanish festival’s opening ceremony and will present his latest work, “Bucking Fastard,” which recently debuted at the Venice Film Festival.
Festival organizers praised Herzog’s six-decade career, noting his creation of approximately 80 films that explore extreme situations and human nature. The filmmaker is recognized as a pioneering figure in New German Cinema, known for developing his distinctive artistic philosophy of “Ecstatic Truth,” which seeks to reveal deeper emotional and poetic layers of reality beyond mere factual observation.
Herzog’s influential filmography includes acclaimed works such as “Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” “Fitzcarraldo,” “Grizzly Man,” and “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.” His documentary “Encounters at the End of the World” earned him an Academy Award nomination in 2008, and his films have received recognition at major festivals including Cannes, Berlin, and Venice.
“Bucking Fastard,” featuring sisters Rooney and Kate Mara, follows an unusual narrative about twins whose profound connection manifests in synchronized speech, shared romantic feelings, and identical dreams. The San Sebastián Film Festival runs from September 18 through 26.
