Washington State University football kicked off fall camp on Thursday with head coach Kirby Moore overseeing the first practice at Rogers Field. Despite scorching heat and challenging conditions on the artificial turf, the Cougars demonstrated strong energy and communication throughout the session, according to Moore’s assessment of the opening day.
The quarterback competition among transfer Caden Pinnick and returners Owen Eshelman and Julian Dugger produced inconsistent results. Pinnick and Eshelman connected on several intermediate passes, particularly with receiver Tony Freeman, but struggled with accuracy on deeper throws, resulting in multiple incompletions. Dugger opted to scramble rather than push the ball downfield, taking a simulated sack during drills. Moore indicated that improved timing and communication between the quarterbacks and their receiving options will be essential as camp progresses.
The offensive line rotation featured several unexpected positional changes, with Kyle Martin shifting from center to left guard and Noah Dunham moving from right guard to center. Right tackle remains unsettled, with Jonny Lester seeing snaps at the position while veterans Max McCree and Jaylin Caldwell, recently recovered from injury, compete for the role. Moore stated the coaching staff will evaluate numerous lineup combinations to determine the strongest five-man unit.
Defensive standouts included tackles Paul Hutson and Balaam Miller, who deflected a Pinnick pass. The defense demonstrated discipline on snap counts and effectively stuffed interior running plays throughout the practice session.
