Nathan Laperi has undergone a remarkable transformation at the University of South Dakota in just one year. The defensive lineman arrived from North Texas last season as a reserve hoping to prove himself, but he has emerged as a key leader for the Coyotes’ defensive front heading into the 2026 campaign.
Though Laperi did not record any starts during his first season in Vermillion, he appeared in all 15 games and established himself as one of the team’s most effective rotational defenders. His statistics were impressive for a backup, including 17 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. He recorded two of those sacks in a single game against Lamar early in the season, demonstrating his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. His strong performance and consistent attitude have earned the trust of the coaching staff.
Now, with several experienced defensive linemen graduated, Laperi finds himself among the most experienced players at his position. He will anchor the defensive front alongside senior Chris Dixon, while new transfers Isaiah Wray, Tyler Sapit, John Starman, and Jeff Bowie round out the unit. The defensive line’s primary objective this season is generating more pressure on quarterbacks, an area where the Coyotes struggled last year.
Laperi has embraced his expanded leadership role, crediting his development to learning from the veterans who came before him and becoming more comfortable with the program and community. Despite USD being picked fifth in conference preseason rankings, Laperi remains confident in his team’s potential.
