Director Gareth Edwards has stepped away from Universal’s upcoming “Jurassic World Rebirth” sequel due to creative disagreements with the studio. Edwards had been anticipated to helm the follow-up to 2025’s “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which successfully rebooted the franchise and earned $870 million at the global box office.
The original film starred Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey in a story centered around a covert mission to extract dinosaur DNA for pharmaceutical purposes. Universal confirmed that screenwriter David Koepp and the three lead actors are expected to return for the sequel, with production targeted to begin in 2027.
Edwards, known for directing “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “The Creator,” had completed the inaugural installment in the rebooted dinosaur franchise. Despite the commercial success of “Jurassic World Rebirth,” the broader franchise has experienced declining returns compared to earlier entries, with production costs typically exceeding $250 million per film. This marks the eighth installment in the “Jurassic” saga that originated with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 original film.
