The platform’s US spokesperson stated that the company’s automated systems detected the broadcast, which allegedly depicted self-harm, and escalated it to human moderators. TikTok subsequently removed the content and permanently suspended the account in question for breaching its community standards. Law enforcement was also notified about the incident.
The livestream in question involved Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., better known as Perez Hilton, a prominent figure in entertainment media who gained recognition through a celebrity gossip blog launched in 2004. His online presence became notable for its commentary on public figures, typically accompanied by illustrations overlaid on photographs.
Discrepancies emerged regarding the duration of the broadcast’s availability on the platform. While some viewers reported the stream remained online for over half an hour, TikTok’s representative contested this, asserting it was accessible for approximately 15 minutes before removal. The company added that follow-up streams initiated by the same account were taken down within 90 seconds. Authorities responded to the situation after receiving multiple reports and transported the individual to a medical facility for evaluation.
The incident has sparked broader conversations about content moderation practices on the platform, with ongoing concerns about consistency in enforcement of community policies prohibiting self-harm content.
