Google has announced significant expansions to its “Ask Maps” feature, bringing automated ordering and booking capabilities directly into the navigation application. The enhanced tool now enables users to order food from nearby restaurants, reserve hotel accommodations, and purchase event tickets without leaving Google Maps. When users submit requests like finding vegan dining options or searching for reasonably priced hotels with specific amenities, Ask Maps identifies relevant options and facilitates transactions through integrated payment platforms.
The company has integrated Personal Intelligence technology into Ask Maps, allowing the system to customize recommendations by accessing user information from Gmail and Google Calendar. This personalization enables contextual responses, such as suggesting activities near a user’s hotel reservation or confirming arrival times for upcoming flights. The feature defaults to off, giving users control over data sharing. Additionally, Ask Maps now maintains conversation history, allowing users to reference previous planning discussions without restarting queries.
These developments mark Google’s strategic shift in positioning Maps as a comprehensive digital assistant rather than solely a navigation resource. The platform now supports real-world task completion across multiple service categories. A new live transit widget provides real-time updates on public transportation delays and conditions. While the food ordering and hotel booking features are rolling out initially in the United States, Personal Intelligence and the transit widget will become available across all markets where Ask Maps currently operates.
