Sony Music has promoted Stephanie Yu to the position of General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs, effective immediately. In this new role, Yu will oversee the company’s legal, business, and governmental affairs operations on a worldwide basis, reporting directly to Sony Music Group Chairman Rob Stringer and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Kelleher. She replaces Julie Swidler, who departed from the position earlier this summer.
Yu brings more than two decades of experience within Sony Music, having joined the organization in 2005 as a litigator. Most recently, she served as Executive Vice President and U.S. Lead of Business and Legal Affairs, where she managed the law division’s strategy and operations across all major Sony Music record labels in the United States. Prior to her Sony tenure, Yu worked for three years at the law firm Covington & Burling.
Stringer praised Yu’s qualifications for the promotion, noting her expertise and extensive background navigating complex legal matters. Yu expressed gratitude for the opportunity, reflecting on how Sony Music has supported her professional development over the past 21 years and pledging to apply that same collaborative approach to her new leadership role during a transformative period for the music industry.
Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Yu remains active in the legal community, serving on the Executive Committee of the Entertainment Law Initiative and previously serving on the board of Womankind, an organization supporting domestic violence and human trafficking victims.
