Wizards of the Coast unveiled the inaugural batch of commanders from Mystery Booster: Commander Edition at Gen Con, featuring experimental mechanics and unconventional deckbuilding approaches that deviate significantly from traditional Magic: The Gathering standards. The reveal came after months of anticipation following the set’s announcement at MagicCon Amsterdam, where players learned the product would contain over 50 new legendary creatures alongside numerous reprints drawn from Magic’s extensive card history.
The set introduces 60 freshly designed legendary creatures developed by designer Gavin Verhey, many incorporating a novel mechanic called Rulebreaker that permits players to circumvent standard Commander format restrictions. Notable inclusions feature cards originally designed for MTG Arena’s digital-only Alchemy format, including Tsagan, Raider Warlord, which makes its first physical appearance while remaining legal across multiple competitive formats. Additionally, the set resurrects the distinctive frame design from 2007’s Future Sight, applying it to 134 reprinted cards, with some experiencing their first printing in foil.
Each booster contains 20 cards, including a mixture of colored commons and uncommons, reprinted commanders, new legendary creatures, and special additions like playtest cards styled after Wizards’ internal development mockups. The product specifically targets Commander Draft gameplay, combining fresh designs with cards spanning Magic’s complete catalog to create dynamic drafting experiences.
Players can access the set through MagicCon events, including MagicCon Atlanta scheduled for November 13-15, or via the Festival in a Box distribution method once availability details are confirmed. Individual cards have begun appearing on secondary markets like TCGplayer.
