Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open due to a wrist injury, raising fresh concerns about his ability to compete in the upcoming US Open title defence later this month. The seven-time Grand Slam champion was scheduled to compete in the ATP Masters 1000 event, which he won last year.
Alcaraz has been largely absent from professional competition since April, when he exited the Barcelona Open in the second round. Although he missed both the French Open and Wimbledon championships while recovering, recent training videos suggested he was nearing a return to the court. Tournament officials expressed optimism about his recovery prospects, with Cincinnati director Bob Moran stating the player is working diligently toward competitive readiness.
The withdrawal leaves Alcaraz with limited opportunities to regain match fitness before the US Open begins on August 30. The Winston-Salem Open, commencing on August 23, represents his final chance to compete before the Grand Slam event, though he has not yet committed to participating. Alcaraz’s absence comes as world number one Jannik Sinner continues an impressive season, recently securing his fifth Grand Slam title with a successful Wimbledon defence.
