The final season of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” has concluded its five-season run on Starz, bringing closure to the origin story of one of the franchise’s most notorious characters. The 1990s-set crime drama followed Kanan Stark’s transformation from a young man into the dangerous criminal seen in the original “Power” series, driven partly by his complicated relationship with his mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas, a powerful drug dealer who wanted to protect him from that world.
The series finale resolved a long-standing mystery for devoted fans. Viewers of the original “Power” had always wondered how Kanan murdered his cousin Jukebox, given their apparent closeness. Creator Sascha Penn revealed that Jukebox killed Raq in retaliation for Kanan’s murder of her father Marvin. Penn explained that the show intentionally explored how different characters’ recollections of events could diverge from reality, a theme that ran throughout the entire “Power” universe.
Penn acknowledged that Raq’s death in the finale was always part of his vision, though he considered alternative endings where the character might escape. He praised actress Patina Miller for making audiences sympathize with the morally complex character in ways similar to how viewers connected with Tony Soprano. With “Raising Kanan” now concluded, the story will continue through Penn’s new Starz series “Power: Origins.”
