Lionsgate Limited has announced upcoming home video releases of the cult classic horror film The Blair Witch Project, offering fans two distinctly different ways to experience the movie. Beginning October 13, both a remastered two-disc Blu-ray edition and an exclusive VHS version will be available for purchase, with preorders currently open.
The 1999 found-footage phenomenon followed three film students documenting a local Maryland legend before mysteriously disappearing in the woods. The film became a cultural touchstone largely due to its innovative marketing strategy, which included a fabricated online mythology and missing person posters that convinced many viewers the events were genuine.
The Blu-ray release provides comprehensive content options, featuring three different cuts of the film: the theatrical version approved by the filmmakers, a newly restored festival cut sourced from original Hi8 tapes and 16mm film, and the original 35mm theatrical print. The package also includes fresh cast interviews alongside legacy bonus materials such as director commentary, deleted scenes, and the original Curse of the Blair Witch mockumentary.
In contrast, the VHS edition takes a minimalist approach, offering the film without supplementary features. The vintage format choice serves as a nostalgic callback to the original marketing campaign that played on audience uncertainty about the material’s authenticity.
