A shooting at a secondary school in northwestern Bangkok has left one person dead and four others wounded, according to Thai officials. The incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district, where the perpetrator, identified as a student, fatally shot a teacher before ending his own life. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene, where photographs showed students evacuating and medical personnel attending to the injured.
Witness accounts from students present during the incident revealed initial confusion about what was happening. One 18-year-old student reported hearing multiple gunshots in succession, describing the sounds as resembling firecrackers or banging before recognizing them as gunfire. The school, which serves approximately 3,100 students and employs around 147 teachers, was thrust into emergency mode as authorities responded to the shooting.
Thailand has experienced several significant gun-related incidents in recent years. A similar school shooting occurred in February in the Hat Yai district in southern Thailand, resulting in one teacher’s death and a student’s injury. Despite strict firearms legislation that imposes prison sentences of up to 10 years for illegal gun possession, gun ownership remains relatively common in the country compared to neighboring nations. Regulations have been strengthened following previous mass shooting events, including mandatory medical evaluations for individuals seeking to purchase or renew firearms licenses.
