Google has announced significant organizational changes within its artificial intelligence leadership structure. Demis Hassabis, who previously led Google DeepMind, is transitioning to serve as chair of the division and chief scientist for parent company Alphabet. He will maintain oversight of Isomorphic Labs, the subsidiary focused on leveraging artificial intelligence for pharmaceutical development.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, who previously held the position of Chief Technology Officer at DeepMind, has been promoted to Senior Vice President of the division and will report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will simultaneously continue his role as Google’s chief artificial intelligence architect. According to Hassabis, these changes allow him to concentrate on applying artificial intelligence to healthcare challenges and addressing strategic matters related to artificial general intelligence development.
The restructuring also includes the departure of Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist at DeepMind and one of the company’s earliest employees. Dean and fellow Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat are establishing Discovery Loop, an artificial intelligence-focused public benefit corporation dedicated to solving problems in machine learning, science, and engineering. Google will serve as a founding investor in the new venture, which aims to accelerate scientific and engineering discovery through advanced artificial intelligence systems.
