Sunbird Messaging has returned to the Google Play Store following a three-year absence, providing Android users with access to iMessage features including blue message bubbles, reaction support, and high-quality video sharing for a monthly subscription fee of $2.99. While recent improvements to cross-platform messaging through RCS technology have narrowed the gap between Android and iOS users, compatibility challenges in iMessage group conversations remain a persistent issue for Android device owners.
The application’s previous shutdown resulted from significant security vulnerabilities, but the company maintains that its rebuilt version incorporates comprehensive protections. According to leadership, messages are encrypted on users’ devices before transmission and protected by Apple’s end-to-end encryption during delivery to iPhones. The firm also claims that Apple ID passwords are used solely for initial setup and subsequently deleted, with no authentication tokens retained for future access.
An independent security audit reportedly identified no critical vulnerabilities in the revamped platform. Beyond iMessage integration, the relaunched app provides access to Google Messages and SMS, with plans to add WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger connectivity later this year. The company also intends to introduce artificial intelligence capabilities that will enable users to summarize conversations and generate message drafts.
