Bolivia has deployed more than 200 police and military personnel to patrol its border with Brazil in response to escalating criminal activity in the region. The deployment comes as rival Brazilian gangs clash over control of drug trafficking routes, creating a security crisis that extends beyond Brazil’s borders.
The violence stemming from these territorial disputes has already claimed at least nine lives. Bolivian authorities determined that the situation posed sufficient threat to warrant the mobilization of security forces along the frontier, where criminal organizations have been competing for dominance over lucrative trafficking corridors.
The troop deployment represents a significant security response to the cross-border implications of Brazilian gang violence.
